WELL-DESERVED HOLIDAYS

After Jürgen Weber, Lufthansa director's stay on the island, (see Mallorca News No. 5), another big wheel in German industry has also plans to spend a short holiday in Mallorca. Last Tuesday, Mark Wössner, director of German publishers Bertelsmann, signed a contract with the American producer MCA, opening up the doors to Hollywood. On the following day, just after closing a megatransaction of 150 thousand million pesetas, the boss of this leading European publishing company -- who earns 200 million pesetas a year, and is thus among the best paid executives in Germany -- agreed to an interview with the local newspaper, Diario de Mallorca, giving them the full scoop of the story.

ROYAL FUN

Mallorca's number one guests are here! The Spanish Royal Family is in Mallorca for their traditional summer visit during which they call out the starting signal for the Copa de Rey, on August 3rd. King Juan Carlos received former President Felipe Gonzalez, with whom he talked for a couple of hours (see photograph), and took advantage of the press conference held afterwards to express his concern over the latest wave of terrorism. And of course, as the true seaman he is, the King also devoted some time to fine-tuning the yacht, LLamp, whose skipper he is. But Prince Felipe brings this summer's surprise (photo:1995, in the Sirius): he will be competing with the royal yacht in this upcoming edition of the Copa del Rey which begins on Saturday, under his own flag in his new sail boat, Aifos. The Fortuna, Their Highnesses' emblematic ship, will be on dry dock for a few days to repair one of its pieces. The years go by even for the Royal Yacht, which suffers from increasing disorders. Conclusion: even the King needs more than one boat!

SNAPPED IN A FLASH

He was the only witness, nobody else saw it. They didn't tire of playing hide and seek with the reporters, but a tourist who happened to be at the right place at the right time took the famous snapshot that none of the swarm of paparazzis on Mallorca had managed to get: Babs and Boris, laid-back, happy, spending their holidays in Mallorca (see Mallorca News No. 5). It was taken in full daylight, in the courtyard of the cafe-restaurant 1900, in Artà. They were having a nice cool drink when a sharp tourist sitting at the next table recognized the famous couple, and didn't hesitate to pull out his camera and shoot! Our colleagues from Mallorca Magazin were the first in getting the coveted trophy. Congratulations!
P.S. It looks like the Beckers want to buy an estate in the Deià-Sóller area. Who knows, we might even be witness a doubles match between the Beckers and the Douglas in the main court at la Residencia in the near future!

A BIRD'S EYE VIEW

Mallorca from above: included in its new collection, Planeta, the Madrid publishing company under the same name, reveals a bird's eye view of the coast and the beaches of Mallorca(photograph: Es Caragol, near the Colonia de San Jordi). The synoptic map and 107 aerial views, indicating roads and access routes make this possible. This comprehensive and useful publication is impressing both for its design and for the information it contains. The other side of the coin: now anybody can find the tiniest, most idyllic beach - at least if you approached it by sea.

+FLASHES+FLASHES+FLA + Cigarettes: a new luxury item. The Spanish Government's announcement of a drastic raise in the luxury tax on cigarettes (between 30 and 50 pesetas a pack) has caused a real shortage of tobacco in the Balearic islands. Many tobacconist's have been forced to go on holiday due to the fact that the Spanish Tobacco Industry has decided to ration distribution of this coveted merchandise due to the onslaught of orders, which in some cases have been up to 10,000 cartons - at the old price, of course -, with the objective of continuing distribution - at the new price - as soon as the raise has actually been applied.
+ Son Sant Joan continues to be a news item: while the Palma airport has registered a flow of 776,000 Spanish passengers during the past month, 27,4% of all Spanish tourism (a new national record), what was already an open secret certain circles (see Mallorca News No.3) has been officially confirmed: the inauguration of the new terminal will be on November 23rd... in a plot under construction! Neither the ten boarding areas nor most of the parking lot will be ready on that day, according to the manager of the Mallorcan airport, Pedro Meaurio.
+ Tour Operator Hetzel's folding also affects the Balearic Islands: bills of the approximate 3,000 tourists who have travelled to Mallorca on Hetzel will be reimbursed; however, the close to 110 collaborating companies will have to accept some losses during the rest of the season, according to a local representative of Ultramar Express. Hetzel, a family business with headquarters in Stuttgart, and lately drowning in millions worth of debts, once ranked fifth in the sector, after TUI, Neckerman, LTU and Alltours.
+ Mallorca has a German radio station again! Since August 1st, La Ola, broadcast on frequency 95.8 FM, supplies German tourists and residents with all sorts of entertaining news. Crack Uwe Bahn from the German radio station NDR, has made this project come true with the collaboration of real estate agent Matthias Kühn(Kühn & Partner). The last German radio station had gone off the air in autumn 1994.
