NIGHT OF MATADORES

Fight of titans in Palma's Coliseo Balear on August 31st: the international boxing championship between Thorsten May, Barcelona '92's olympic champion, and the current number one, American Adolpho Washington (see previous numbers of Mallorca News). The evening will be brightened further by the legendary pop artist, Udo Jürgens and singer Jocelyn B. Smith ("Superbowl"). The cast is completed by eight other boxers, among whom are Manuel Calvo and Luis Navarro, fighting for the Spanish feather-weight championship. Tickets (from 4.000 Pts. ) are available at the Corte Inglés in Palma and at outlets of the real estate agency Kühn & Partner (Matthias Kühn is promoter of the event). German tour operator N.U.R. Touristik offers a package deal for round-about 50,000 ptas, including flight and accommodation.
May, originally from Frankfurt/Oder like the famous champion Henry Maske and one of the Sauerland troop, is already on the island. The olympic champion has been staying in an estate in the area of Santa Maria since last Saturday, preparing for the great event. RTL, German private TV station is busy with last minute arrangements for live broadcasting from 22.00 h. msm-Media Service Mallorca is also busy-busy, since we are collaborating with the channel in Cologne in the logistic coordination of the championship.

BLOWING IN THE WIND

Surprise at the Copa del Rey: the German sailing ship, Pinta, sailed by professional boat racer, John Kostecki (silver medal in the Soling class at the '92 Olympics) won the most prestigious sailing prize in the Mediterranean, by just beating the Italian Brava Q8 and the Spanish Nationale Nederlanden. The first stages were already forecasts of this final triumph, the culmination of 10 days of hard work and nerves on end. In the prizegiving ceremony at the Real Club Nautico(photograph), the Pinta's crew not only celebrated their triumph receiving the precious trophy from King Juan Carlos, but also a lovely smile from Queen Doña Sofia.

IT'S ONLY A NAME

Bad times for landowners: as of today, the twelve mansions on the Sierra de Tramuntana, which used to belong to Archiduque Luis Salvador have been declared national monuments, including the famous possesió Son Marroig in Deía (photograph). This Archiduke from Habsburg (died 1916) bought these properties and adjoining land in the late 19th century, which he then left to his Mallorcan lady lover of many years. They now mostly have private owners, who from now on cannot dispose freely of their property and must get a special permit for any sort of building or changes, no matter how small they are. So, if you're interested in buying a little estate on the island, you had better get your hands on a good family tree of everyone who had been there before.

WITH HONOURS

It was bound to be really special, and that it was. A grand party organized by the Hotel Federation of S'Illot in honour of ex-minister of tourism and current minster of culture (after the latest reorganization of the local Board of Ministers), Joan Flaquer. The high point of this magnificent party, where President Jaume Matas and new Minister of Tourism José Gonzalez Ortea were also present, was a musical review with a hot erotic show included (see photo). The photographers did their job, and the politicians did what they could! Lesson learnt: It may be better not to be at all the parties!

+FLASHES+FLASHES+FLA + The Balearic Islands continue on the upswing; Mallorca has a place in the economic picture (see Mallorca News No. 7). It has the highest standard of living in all of Spain with a yearly income per capita of roughly a million and a half pesetas. Added to this, the island's gross national product is 5% over the average in Spain. The CAEB (Federation of Balearic Business Associations) anticipates that the growth rate in the year 2000 will be above the average in the EU.
+ Crisis in Iberia: From November 1st, this Spanish airline will no longer have direct flights to London, Paris or Frankfurt from Palma de Mallorca. This would seem to be a sign of the company's difficult financial situation. In the tougher and tougher airline world Iberia has had to face heavy losses due to the new private competitors such as Air Europe and the charter companies.
+ Crisis in Frankfurt, too: Miguel Ortega, director of the Spanish Office of Tourism in Germany has warned Mallorquín hotel owners not to raise their prices for the next season. According to most tour operators German consumers cannot afford higher prices.
+ Triumph for Gigi Howard, Prince Felipe's (ex)girlfriend. Twenty four year-old Spanish journalist, Carlos Hugo Arriazu, has been declared guilty by the Supreme Court in New York City of tapping the American model's telephone (see Mallorca News No. 7). This colleague's excessive professional fervour could cost him up to four years in prison.
