THEY WENT TOO FAR

Time-sharing, in Spanish: multipropiedad, has never been everyone's cup of tea, but lately companies involved in time-sharing property sales in tourist complexes have pushed their luck, and tourists haven't been the only ones affected. The three complexes with most complaints and charges against them in the last few months will now be penalized and maybe even have to close down, according to sources from the Ministry of Tourism last week. The Cala Pí complex already had to pay a fine of 5 million pesetas last year, and now the urbanizations of Cala de Mar and Aucanada will have to pay their dues. Officially the cause is illegal proceedings with tourists. Off the books, the reason for the complaints are the "ticket-collectors", whose job is to lure tourists to the complexes and blatantly get them to sign a paper, the faster the better. Things have even gone too far for the mayor of Santanyí, Cosme Adrover, and he has presented an official complaint to the local government. In the Cala d'Or area around 250 people are at work every day only attracting possible clients.

OPENING NIGHT

Thanks running into director Bernhard Paul on an airplane, we were the first to publish (see Mallorca News No. 4) what is now official: the famous Flic Flac Circus will set up permanent headquarters on the Balearic Islands, and will be the first circus to do so; work on it will start in November. The big top will hold 4,000 people and will have an extension of 4,400 m2. It will be built at the end of the Palma-Peguera highway, near the Club de Hielo and its inauguration is foreseen for March 1997. The Mallorcan branch of this famous circus which has been so successful throughout Europe will also have a school of artists. According to José Luis Feliu, in charge of this project, "a circus and training must go hand in hand, and both things should be done in the same place. We have decided on Mallorca because of the many privileges the island presents, such as the climate and the tourist infrastructure". The Calvía council, which is already well endowed with different resources, has received this project with open arms and has high expectations regarding this new source of income.

BYE, BYE INA

She was in charge of the Fomento de Turismo of Mallorca, an institution that deals with everything regarding public relations and marketing in tourism, for two years. She was Consellera de Turisme of the overthrown local government lead by Cristofol Soler for two and a half days. Now Ina Martínez has decided to quit from the Fomento and as of October 1st will manage the Hotel Bon Sol in Illetes. She was a very competent advisor and collaborator with us at msm, always friendly, willing and helpful, and she had a lot to do with our first successes. Thank you Ina, and we wish you the best of luck in your future project!

+FLASHES+FLASHES+FLA + More and more specific: plans regarding the Open Golf Tournament which will be held in 1998 in Mallorca are becoming more and more concrete. In his dealing with the local government, Carlos Horno, General Director of Turespaña, states that all that's missing to start preliminary organization is a third company to share expenses.
+ More and more imaginative: it now turns out that the Sóller Tunnel, which was to be inaugurated on December 15th, will be put off until early 1997 due to the heavy rainfall last week. The civil servant in charge of commenting on this fact made a great display of imagination and fast thinking: "We have always said the tunnel would be inaugurated in winter. And February 97 is still winter, after all!".
+ More and more important: over 11,000 documents are at the disposal of Internet buffs when they are looking for information on the Balearic islands under the Spanish search system Excite. And pretty soon there will be another hundred since the Mallorquín Hotel Federation will soon be on Internet too.
