VARIATIONS ON THE THEME

He's the manager and co-owner of one of Europe's leading and most powerful family owned companies. The Schörghuber consortium (4,000 employees and an approximate turnover of 200 thousand million pesetas in 1996) deals in the real estate sector, luxury hotels (Arabella, Son Vida; see photo ), airline leasing and beer companies (Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr). Stefan Schörghuber, (35, see photo) heir to the business, took advantage of one of his brief visits to the island to give us his visiting card.
In an interview published in the local newspaper, Diario de Mallorca, he guaranteed he would be continuing his father's steps (an unconditional fan of the island, passed away in 1995) and invest some 30 thousand million pesetas in the Balearic Islands over the next ten years. However, his tone was very different in the local German newspaper, the Mallorca Magazin, where he was quoted as regretting the Consell Insular's conservative policies. The Consell has decided to freeze, or at very least cut back, two of his current projects: a luxury hotel, Son Muntaner, within a golf complex, and Punta Negra, a residential development, which also has a hotel. Schörghuber's declarations make one wonder: "Mallorca has to take a serious look at what it wants to become in the future. There's no investor who can work like this, nor is it a way of attracting investors".
Is this a result of the island's laid-back attitude to life, or, on the contrary, is it very strict political criteria? Perhaps Mr Schörghuber isn't aware that German is spoken and understood very well in many of the local official agencies?

TENNIS TOURNAMENT IN THE SUNSHINE

The Tennis Davis Cup eliminations between Germany and Spain, 1997's major sports event, will be held in Mallorca. After the decision was announced last Wednesday in Madrid, Ventura Blanch, Sports General Director for the Govern Balear, declared:"This will be the most important sports event in the history of Mallorca".
Boris Becker & Co (see photo) will be challenging Carlos Moyá, Spain's leading tennis player, in Cala Ratjada from the 7th to the 9th of February. The Club de Tenis S'Aguait and the Coll d'Os offer the best conditions for an event of this magnitude. Backing from the Capdepera Services Hotel Association, the Balearic Islands Tennis Federation and IBATUR, who will undertake most of the financing (which comes to a total of between 45 and 50 million pesetas) has had a favourable effect on Mallorca's being chosen.

HURRAH FOR THE "REAL"

Cause for celebration at the King's Cup! The match between the second division aspiring to first Real Mallorca and the also aspiring league winner Deportivo La Coruña (8 national players from six nations, with the same points as the Real Madrid in the league and only second after the Barcelona) at the local stadium of Lluís Sitjar finished with a score of 1:0 for the home team. Offensive, convincing football playing, great tactics, several goal possibilities that didn't actually come to be, a near penalty... in spite of all this the Real Mallorca will have to play just as bravely in the return match. John Toshack, the rival team's coach, was complimentary: "The Mallorca could have ruled us out of the Cup today without going any further".

YOUNG AND NASTY

Young and daring, she's the Demi Moore of the erotic scene (at least as far as her emoluments are concerned) and the proud owner, together with her German husband and producer, Hans Moser, of a grand mansion on the island of Ibiza. According to experts on the matter, Sarah Young (British, 25), is none the less than the current Porno Queen (see photograph). The couple has started the first film and multimedia production company "for adults" (Spanish euphemism for these "gymnastics") in the Balearic islands. Moser, who shot his first erotic films in 1973 at a hotel in Canyamel and who distributes the videomagazines Young and Nasty, Sexmania and Erotikon from his base in Ibiza, is quoted in an interview by Matías Vallés for the Diario de Mallorca as saying "the climate is decisive. People are constantly talking about quality of life, but it can only really be found here".

+FLASHES+FLASHES+FLA + The Balearic Islands, both rich and expensive: not only is the cost of living high in Mallorca and its neighbouring islands (see Mallorca News 16), so is the income. With a gross interior product of 119,7 points, it is 20% over Madrid's, which comes in second, and 20% higher than the EU's average (Source: Banco de Bilbao Vizcaya).
+ New figures from the local Department of Tourism: this year the tourist industry will invoice 667 thousand million pesetas, four per cent over last year. Every visitor spends an average of 10,100 ptas. per day, out of which 7,100 ptas, that is, a third, stay on the island.
+ In accordance with the times: as Iberia cuts down on international flights to and from the Balearic islands (see Mallorca News 9 and 12), German airline Deutsche Lufthansa is expanding its scope. As of November 3rd there is a new flight between Munich and Palma, departure: 11.35 h.
+ Old problems, new date: the new Son Sant Joan airport facilities (terminal, access, connecting bridges, temporary parking lot for 1,450 cars) will start working on February 15th... according to official sources. We'll see!
